First time using the cavatron was a bit scary. I didn't know exactly how it would affect the patient until my winced. I knew then that the cavatron should be used carefully. A couple things I struggled with was hooking up the cavatron. I didnt know what part went where and had to ask alot of questions. I think if we were shown the cavatron more than once or twice I would feel more confident in using that particular tool, but it was a learning experience having to do it on the spot. While using the cavatron water was going everywhere. I soaked my patient and it was a bit embarrassing. How can I improve my use of the cavatron so I wont soak my patient?

Maria,
ReplyDeleteIn the Wood's Clinic, I believe there is a control for the water; however, for the combo clinic, there isn't one. My only advice is to use ALOT of suction, especially the big white one.. I think they call it an HVE? I think that suction will help a lot more when we are on our own and don't have that extra pair of hands to hold on to the suction for us. I feel like that saliva ejector just wouldn't do the job. But, you know that I'm new to it too, so I could be totally wrong :) Slowly but surely, we will all figure out the best way for us to handle the cavitron and suctioning and be to get our patients out of the chair without giving them a shower as well as good dental care :)
Haha I would love to help you, but I havent had to use the cavatron yet. I really wish we had gotten a chance to practice with it at least once before seeing our real patients! Now, I just get to wait anxiously until I have a patient that I have to actually use it on. Am I'm hoping I even know the correct way to use it!
ReplyDeleteBend the small suction and hook it on the patient's cheek. I can't see anything when I am using it so I know what you mean. I hope the Piezo is better! I am not sure on how to hook it up either, so if you got that far you deserve a round of applause! I only used it once and I had to use tactile senses in some areas because all I could see in my mirror was water everywhere. There is a chance I could have the water on too high. My other suggestion is to bring a raincoat.
